Three things to consider when choosing a wedding photographer

Planning a wedding is an exciting journey filled with pockets of opportunities to create your perfect day. When it comes to capturing the magic of that day, and encapsulating those memories forever, the right photographer can make all the difference. As a luxury destination wedding photographer, I’ve had the privilege of working with couples from all around the world. A few very important things make all the difference when we decide together, if my studio is the right fit. Here are three things to consider when choosing a wedding photographer:

1.A style that speaks to you

The first step in choosing any professional, but especially a wedding photographer, is aligning with their art style. Every photographer has a unique artistic touch to their work, and if they’re experienced enough, they’ve found a way to identify and communicate it. Some specialize in timeless classic photography that could be put in a bridal magazine. Others have more candid, documentary style “fly on the wall” photography that captures the essence of the in-between moments.

Take the time to go through whatever portfolio or social media they’ve made available and ask yourself “Can I see myself in these images?”. Remember, your wedding photos are one of the only lasting reminders of your day. It’s important that your photographer’s style resonates with you.

2. Understanding pricing & packages

Photography is an investment, plain and simple. Packages can vary greatly and what each individual studio offers in their package is diverse. From travel fees (if they travel), to the number of hours covered, to different mediums like film, to albums, etc. Think about what YOU would like to prioritize. What’s important to you? Going home with an heirloom for you and your family? Having a photographer present for the entire duration of the day, or just the ceremony and reception?

Some photographers even offer packages for multi-day celebrations like rehearsal dinners, welcome parties, day-after outings, etc. Invest in a photographer that can give you exactly what you want, within your budget.

3. Personality & connection matters!

Your photographer will be with you in the most intimate and vulnerable parts of your day. They might see you laugh, cry, share an embrace with a loved one. It’s important that your photographer is not only a talented professional but someone you feel comfortable around and trust.

As a destination photographer, I try my best to make my initial consultation with all potential clients a Zoom/Facetime/video call. So that they can see my face, my genuine smile, and have a sense of ease at putting name to face. After they’ve chosen me as their photographer, I send a detailed questionnaire asking everything from favorite music to future travel plans. This ensures that by the time I show up weeks or months later, it feels more like reconnecting with an old friend than meeting a professional for the first time. That connection makes you so much more relaxed. The more comfortable you are, the more confident you will feel, and the more beautiful your images will be.

Reviews & testimonials

Past clients can provide a unique insight as to what it’s like to work with a photographer. The reviews they leave can highlight not only the satisfaction with the service they provided, but their punctuality, communication, and how well they handled the day’s (sometimes unpredictable) events. As a destination photographer, the majority of my clients come from abroad. I understand the trust that they have in me comes largely from my reputation amongst my clients and also other industry professionals.

Choosing a wedding photographer is more than just ticking off a box on your to-do list—it’s about finding someone who will help tell the story of your day. From capturing the delicate details to preserving the raw emotions, a good photographer will make sure that every moment is preserved for you to relive time and time again.

As someone who’s had the honor of documenting love stories for nearly 15 years, I can tell you this—when you invest in a photographer whose style, experience, and personality align with your vision, you can enjoy your day knowing that your memories are in good hands.
